Quick tips

  • Conversion runs locally in the browser, so your STL is not uploaded.
  • STL has no reliable unit metadata, so verify scale and millimeter assumptions in your slicer.
  • This MVP writes core mesh geometry only; materials, textures, printer profiles, and build settings are not recreated.
  • Open the downloaded 3MF in your target slicer and run its mesh repair check before printing.

About STL to 3MF conversion

Convert STL to a geometry-only 3MF package locally in your browser for modern slicers and print handoff. No upload or sign-up.

Free STL to 3MF Converter is designed for quick browser-side preparation before upload, printing, modeling, compression, review, or handoff. Files are processed locally so you can keep lightweight jobs out of server queues.

How to use STL to 3MF conversion

1

Choose a file

Select a local file from the upload area. The page checks the file type and size before processing.

2

Process locally

Run the tool in your current browser session without installing desktop software.

3

Download the result

Download the finished file and review it before printing, modeling, publishing, or handoff.

Why use this browser tool

Local-first processing

STL to 3MF conversion runs in the browser, which is useful for quick files you do not want to upload.

No installation

Open the page and work immediately across devices without setting up a desktop utility.

Free output

No account is required for these browser utilities, and exported files are not watermarked.

Workflow-ready

Use the result in slicers, 3D viewers, editors, web pages, review threads, or delivery folders.

Format comparison

STL

Stereolithography

A triangle mesh format used heavily in 3D printing and geometry-only manufacturing workflows.

  • Very broad slicer support
  • Geometry-only surface mesh
  • No standard units, material, or texture data
  • Simple output for print checks

3MF

3D Manufacturing Format

A modern 3D printing package for meshes, colors, materials, textures, and print intent.

  • Good for additive manufacturing projects
  • Can include color and material data
  • Can package print settings and model resources
  • Best when the receiving slicer supports 3MF

Choose STL to 3MF when

Best use

Use it for modern slicer handoff when you want core mesh geometry in a packaged manufacturing format.

What carries over

The export carries triangle mesh geometry in a core 3MF package. It does not recreate materials, textures, printer profiles, or build settings missing from STL.

Check before handoff

Open the 3MF in your target slicer and check scale, manifold geometry, normals, and mesh repair warnings before printing.

STL to 3MF print-readiness checklist

  1. 1STL is unitless

The source STL has no declared unit, so the converter cannot read a scale from the file itself.

  2. 23MF declares a unit

The exporter writes the 3MF package with millimeters declared, removing the unit ambiguity for the slicer.

  3. 3No silent rescale

Numeric dimensions are preserved; only the unit label changes from "none" to millimeters.

  4. 4The slicer no longer guesses

Because the 3MF declares millimeters, Cura, PrusaSlicer, and Bambu Studio no longer have to guess the unit.

  5. 5Bounding box is preserved

Width, height, and depth are measured from the mesh world bounds and carried into the 3MF package.

  6. 6Orientation has no source metadata

STL has no up-axis metadata, so confirm the printed orientation in the slicer after import.

  7. 7Colors and materials are not added

A geometry-only STL becomes a geometry-only 3MF; the exporter does not invent colors or materials.

  8. 8No textures or thumbnails

STL carries no texture or thumbnail parts, so none appear in the generated 3MF.

  9. 9One build item

A single STL mesh becomes one 3MF build item unless you split it downstream.

  10. 10Print settings are not generated

The 3MF receives geometry but no slicer profiles or printer settings.

  11. 113MF does not repair the mesh

Packaging a non-watertight STL into 3MF does not fix the holes; repair the mesh first.

  12. 12Non-manifold edges

Repair edges shared by more than two triangles before packaging and printing.

  13. 13Degenerate triangles

Clean zero-area faces so the 3MF package does not carry broken geometry.

  14. 14Winding and normals

Fix winding conflicts and flipped normals before the 3MF is handed to a slicer.

  15. 15Wall thickness

Confirm thin walls meet your printer minimum (about 0.8 mm to 1.2 mm for a 0.4 mm nozzle).

  16. 16Bed size fit

Compare the declared dimensions to your build volume (for example 256 x 256 x 256 mm).

  17. 17Unitless STL scale risk

A unitless STL may print at the wrong scale; declaring millimeters in 3MF removes that ambiguity.

  18. 183MF supports richer data later

Colors, materials, and multiple parts can be re-added downstream in a 3MF-aware editor or slicer.

  19. 19Keep STL when the target only reads STL

If the next tool only accepts STL, keep the STL; use 3MF only when the slicer benefits from the package.

  20. 20Slicer delivery checklist

Open the 3MF in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, and Cura, then verify unit, scale, and orientation before printing.

Frequently asked questions

What is STL to 3MF conversion?

Convert STL to a geometry-only 3MF package locally in your browser for modern slicers and print handoff. No upload or sign-up.

Is STL to 3MF conversion free?

Yes. This browser tool is free to use and does not add watermarks to exported files.

Are my files uploaded?

No for these browser utilities. The supported processing path runs locally in your browser session.

What file size works best?

Smaller files finish faster. Very large images, videos, or 3D meshes may be limited by browser memory and device performance.

Will the output keep every detail?

The output follows the limits of 3MF. Materials, animation, textures, or metadata that the target format cannot represent may not be preserved.

Do I need to install software?

No. Use the page directly in a current browser, then download the processed result.
