Quick tips

  • Conversions run locally in the browser, so no model upload is required.
  • glTF input works best when the file is self-contained or embeds its buffers.
  • STL output is geometry-first and may drop materials, textures, rigs, or animations.

Format comparison

glTF

GL Transmission Format

A JSON-based 3D asset format for interoperable runtime delivery and inspection.

  • Readable JSON scene structure
  • Good for web and toolchain handoff
  • May reference external buffers or textures
  • Embedded glTF works best for browser-only conversion

STL

Stereolithography

A triangle mesh format used heavily in 3D printing and geometry-only manufacturing workflows.

  • Very broad slicer support
  • Geometry-only surface mesh
  • No standard units, material, or texture data
  • Simple output for print checks

Choose glTF to STL when

Best use

Use it for 3D printing, slicer checks, and manufacturing review when a geometry-only triangle mesh is enough.

What carries over

The mesh surface is the useful part. STL does not standardize materials, textures, rigs, and animation, so treat those as intentionally dropped.

Units and slicer presets

glTF coordinates are defined in meters, while STL stores no unit. Preserve numeric dimensions by default; select a millimeter preset only for a Cura, PrusaSlicer, or Bambu Studio handoff.

When not to convert to STL

Keep the glTF source when you still need materials, textures, animation, hierarchy, or scene metadata. STL is for geometry-only print handoff.

Check before handoff

Open the STL in a slicer or STL viewer and check scale, manifold geometry, normals, and wall thickness.

glTF to STL print-readiness checklist

  1. 1glTF coordinates are meters

Like GLB, a glTF scene defines linear units in meters, so the source is treated as meters before export.

  2. 2STL stores no unit

The numeric dimensions are preserved, but the meter label is dropped from the STL output.

  3. 3No silent millimeter rescale

Dimensions stay numeric by default; only the Cura, PrusaSlicer, or Bambu Studio preset converts to millimeters.

  4. 4Resolve external buffers first

A glTF with external .bin buffers must be complete before conversion; missing buffers fail or drop geometry.

  5. 5Check embedded vs external textures

Confirm whether images are embedded or referenced; referenced textures resolve only when the files are present.

  6. 6Millimeter preset multiplies by 1000

The slicer preset converts the meter-space model to millimeters for a physical print.

  7. 7World transform is baked into bounds

The bounding box is measured from the scene world transform, so the reported size matches what prints.

  8. 8Y-up to Z-up orientation

The glTF scene is Y-up; reorient the mesh to Z-up in the slicer before generating gcode.

  9. 9PBR materials are dropped

Base color, metallic, and roughness are not written into STL.

  10. 10Textures are dropped

Image maps referenced by the glTF are discarded during the geometry-only export.

  11. 11Animations are dropped

Skins, morph targets, and keyframes are not representable in STL; only the bind-pose mesh remains.

  12. 12Node hierarchy is flattened

A multi-node glTF scene merges into one STL mesh surface on export.

  13. 13Watertightness check

Confirm zero open boundaries after conversion; holes in the surface produce failed prints.

  14. 14Non-manifold edges

Repair any edge shared by three or more triangles before a production print.

  15. 15Degenerate triangles

Remove zero-area faces so the slicer does not error out.

  16. 16Winding conflicts

Fix flipped normals so the slicer sees a consistent inside and outside.

  17. 17Wall thickness

Validate thin walls against your nozzle and layer settings before printing.

  18. 18Bed size fit

Compare the converted dimensions to common beds such as a 256 mm cube.

  19. 19Keep glTF for scene structure

If you need the JSON scene structure, buffers, or PBR materials, keep the glTF instead of converting.

  20. 20Slicer delivery checklist

Open in Bambu Studio first and confirm scale, then cross-check PrusaSlicer and Cura before printing.

A 1.8 m glTF character that arrives as 1.8 mm

glTF declares its linear unit as metres. STL declares nothing at all. Every surprise in a glTF to STL round trip comes from that mismatch rather than from the geometry, which is why the converter reports the unit it assumed before it writes the file.

The conversion itself is mechanical: read the scene, flatten it to triangles, write geometry and face normals only. Materials, textures, rigs, animations, and the unit declaration are all listed as lost, because STL has nowhere to put them.

  1. 1Export with a slicer preset when the scene is in metres

The Cura, Prusa, and Bambu presets convert metres to millimetres, so a 1.8 m character is written as 1800 mm. With Preserve selected the same scene exports as 1.8, and a slicer that assumes millimetres reads a 1.8 mm speck.

  2. 2Send a self-contained file

A .gltf is JSON that points at sibling .bin and texture files. The loader parses only the single file you choose and has no base path to resolve those siblings, so export GLB from your 3D tool when the scene is not self-contained.

  3. 3Read the loss report, not just the preview

The quality report names what the target cannot carry — textures, materials, rigs, animations, and unit metadata — so you find out before a print rather than after an unwrap.

  4. 4Repair, then slice

STL does not fix non-manifold edges, open shells, or inverted winding, it only makes them visible. Run the exported file through the print-readiness checker, then confirm orientation in the STL viewer.

Frequently asked questions

What is glTF to STL conversion?

Convert glTF to STL in the browser: flatten the scene to geometry-only triangles, then see what STL drops, the unit it assumed, and what to check before slicing.

Is glTF to STL conversion free?

Yes. This browser tool is free to use and does not add watermarks to exported files.

Are my files uploaded?

No for these browser utilities. The supported processing path runs locally in your browser session.

What file size works best?

Smaller files finish faster. Very large images, videos, or 3D meshes may be limited by browser memory and device performance.

Will the output keep every detail?

The output follows the limits of STL. Materials, animation, textures, or metadata that the target format cannot represent may not be preserved.

Do I need to install software?

No. Use the page directly in a current browser, then download the processed result.

Does glTF to STL keep textures and materials?

No. STL stores triangles and face normals only, so PBR materials, texture images, and UV-mapped colour are not written. Re-apply colour in the slicer or printer software, or keep the glTF for anything you still need to shade.

Why does my model arrive tiny in the slicer?

glTF is defined in metres and STL has no unit field. Export with the Cura, Prusa, or Bambu preset, which converts metres to millimetres, or keep Preserve and rescale in the slicer. A 1.8 m scene otherwise reads as 1.8 mm.

Why will my .gltf file not load?

A .gltf is JSON that references sibling .bin and image files. The converter parses the single file you select and cannot read those siblings from your disk, so export GLB from your 3D tool first.

Is rigging or animation preserved?

No. The report lists animations as lost because STL has no channels to carry them. Only the mesh as it stands at export time is written.
